چکیده

Post-application pesticide emissions from wetted leaf surfaces and soil may present a significant pathway of exposure to humans in nearby residential communities. In this study, high volume air sampling was performed to measure airborne concentrations of the pesticide methamidophos in a residential community in close proximity to aerial spraying. Sampling occurred before, during and 24 h post-application. To evaluate whether predictive models could reliably estimate residential exposure to methamidophos, an emission factor was used for estimating fluxes of volatilized material over the sprayed area for a 1-day post-application period. These flux estimates were then incorporated into a fugitive dust gaussian dispersion model (FDM) for assessing distribution of mass around the sprayed area. The predictive model output was compared with the field air sampler measurements. In our comparison, 1-day flux estimates from the model were found to be associated to observed field measurement data, with an r 1⁄4 0:63 the day of the spray and r 1⁄4 0:67 the day after the spray. The volatilization model however appears to underestimate surface emission flux immediately after the spray and overestimate the emission the next day. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluation and Mitigation of Spray Drift

Definition of Drift When liquids are forced under pressure through small orifices (like sprayer nozzles) they are sheared into small aerosols or particles having nearly a thousand fold range in spherical diameters. Owing to gravitational forces and the viscosity of air, the rate of fall to ground can be predicted by Stokes Law and is proportional to the radius of the particles. The rate of fall...

Spray drift of pesticides arising from aerial application in cotton.

This paper presents results from field studies carried out during the 1993-1998 Australian cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seasons to monitor off-target droplet movement of endosulfan (6,7,8,9,10,10-hexachloro-1,5,5a,6,9,9a-hexahydro-6,9-methano-2,4,3-benzodioxathiepin 3-oxide) insecticide applied to a commercial cotton crop. Averaged over a wide range of conditions, off-target deposition 500 m ...

Response of spray drift from aerial applications at a forest edge to atmospheric stability

A biological pesticide was aerially applied to a hardwood forest – corn field edge in a replicated series of single spray swaths. The drift of small droplets, which remained suspended in the air after each spray swath, was monitored remotely and mapped with the University of Connecticut portable, elastic-backscatter lidar. Plumes of small droplets were tracked which drifted off after every spra...

Characterization of spray deposition and drift from a low drift nozzle for aerial application at different application altitudes

A complex interaction of controllable and uncontrollable factors is involved in aerial application of crop production and protection materials. Although it is difficult to completely characterize spray deposition and drift, these important factors can be estimated with appropriate sampling protocol and analysis. Application height is an important variable influencing off-target spray drift, but...

Acute Pesticide Illnesses Associated with Off-Target Pesticide Drift from Agricultural Applications: 11 States, 1998–2006

BACKGROUND Pesticides are widely used in agriculture, and off-target pesticide drift exposes workers and the public to harmful chemicals. OBJECTIVE We estimated the incidence of acute illnesses from pesticide drift from outdoor agricultural applications and characterized drift exposure and illnesses. METHODS Data were obtained from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's...
